Thanks to my blogger friend, Nancy, for suggesting I check out Jim Adam’s’ “Song Lyric Sunday” prompt. http://Buy-A-Musical Instrument Day. This week the theme is to find a song that expresses appreciation for music, singing, or listening to the radio.
In my years on the radio, I always tried to be as one on one as possible. The way I thought about it, it was just the listener and me hanging out together listening to our favorite songs. Just two friends enjoying each other’s company.
The song that immediately came to mind was one that a listener once told me made her think of me. We became friends through conversations on the phone at various stations over the years, and remain friends today. The song is from Charlie Dore.
Pilot of the Airwaves
Pilot of the airwaves
Here is my request
You don’t have to play it
But I hope you’ll do your best
I’ve been listening to your show
On the radio
And you seem like a friend to me
Or a record of your choice
I don’t mind, I’d be happy just to hear your voice
Saying this is for the girl
Who didn’t sign her name
Yes, she needs a dedication just the same
Late at night I’m still listening
Don’t waste my time chasing sleep
People say I look weary
But that’s just the company I keep
Ooooh, you make the nighttime race
Ooooh, I don’t need to see your face
You’re sounding good (Sounding good)
Sounding good to me
Pilot of the airwaves
Here is my request
You don’t have to play it
But I hope you’ll do your best
I’ve been listening to your show
On the radio
And you seem like a friend to me
Late at night I’m still listening
Don’t waste my time chasing sleep
People say I look weary
But that’s just the company I keep
Ooooh, you make the nighttime race
Ooooh, I don’t need to see your face
You’re sounding good (Sounding good)
Sounding good to me
You’re sounding so good to me
Oh, I’ve been listening to your show on the radio
And you seem like a friend to me
Pilot of the airwaves
Here is my request
You don’t have to play it
But I hope you’ll do your best
I’ve been listening to your show
On the radio
And you seem like a friend to me
Wow, this brings back memories of sitting in my room calling the DJ to request a song and hearing a friendly voice on the line…

Good song. I remember it but never looked at the lyrics closely. It’s a good nod to DJs and how radio used to be almost like a fire d, not a commodity.

Welcome to Song Lyric Sunday and thanks for stopping by and sharing your music, Keith as this song fit in perfectly with the theme today. I like how this song expresses how a DJ can become a trusted, familiar friend to their listeners.

Glad to take part! It is a shame that many radio owners forget how important real/live personalities are.
