Song Lyric Sunday

This week, Jim Adams has asked us to write about a song that reference a picture, image, scan or view. Here are my choices:

Picture – Kid Rock/Sheryl Crow

I couldn’t believe we played this on the country station I was working for. I could see it being a pop hit, but it surprised a lot of people and did well at country radio, too. The song was written by Kid Rock and there were rumors that Rock and Crow were dating in real life, but they both denied it.

Songfacts.com states that “Sheryl Crow’s contribution was almost kiboshed over a dispute between her label, A&M, and Rock’s label, Atlantic. Rock ended up recording a version with Allison Moorer that was released as a single, but the version on the album featured Crow, and she’s also in the music video. Some radio stations played the official single with Moorer, but most played the version with Crow because she was a bigger name. When the song charted, Billboard faced a conundrum because it wasn’t clear who should be credited with Rock. They ended up listing the artist as “Kid Rock featuring Allison Moorer or Sheryl Crow.”

Living my life in a slow hell
Different girl every night at the hotel
I ain’t seen the sunshine in three damn days
Been fueling up on cocaine and whisky
I wish I had a good girl to miss me
Lord, I wonder if I’ll ever change my ways

I put your picture away
Sat down and cried today
I can’t look at you while I’m lying next to her
I put your picture away
Sat down and cried today
I can’t look at you while I’m lying next to her

I called you last night in the hotel
Everyone knows, but they won’t tell
But their half-hearted smiles tell me something just ain’t right
I’ve been waiting on you for a long time
Fueling up on heartaches and cheap wine
I ain’t heard from you in three damn nights

I put your picture away
I wonder where you’ve been
I can’t look at you while I’m lyin’ next to him
I put your picture away
I wonder where you’ve been
I can’t look at you while I’m lyin’ next to him

I saw you yesterday with an old friend
It was the same old same, how have you been?
Since you’ve been gone, my world’s been dark and grey

You reminded me of brighter days
I hoped you were coming home to stay
I was headed to church
I was off to drink you away

I thought about you for a long time
Can’t seem to get you off my mind
I can’t understand why we’re living life this way

I found your picture today
I swear I’ll change my ways
I just called to say I want you to come back home
I found your picture today
I swear I’ll change my ways
I just called to say I want you to come back home
I just called to say I love you
Come back home

Photographs and Memories – Jim Croce

The song is the title track to the first Jim Croce Greatest Hits album. It was released on September 26, 1974 and the second posthumous release following his 1973 death in an airplane crash.

Wiki quotes a Billboard review of the album: “It is hard to believe one man poured out a fountain of excellent work in barely two years, but this LP offers proof of the greatness of Croce’s career and is, in all respects, truly a greatest hits album. They’re all worthwhile and this magnificent collection makes one realize just how greatly this man will be missed. The beauty of music, however, is that he will always be heard.”

That quote is so accurate. The amount of amazing stuff that he wrote and recorded still blows my mind. He was a talent gone too soon.

Photographs and memories
Christmas cards you sent to me
All that I have are these
To remember you

Memories that come at night
Take me to another time
Back to a happier day
When I called you mine

But we sure had a good time
When we started way back when
Morning walks and bedroom talks
Oh how I loved you then

Summer skies and lullabies
Nights we couldn’t say good-bye
And of all of the things that we knew
Not a dream survived

Photographs and memories
All the love you gave to me
Somehow it just can’t be true
That’s all I’ve left of you

But we sure had a good time
When we started way back when
Morning walks and bedroom talks
Oh how I loved you then

Image of a Girl – The Safaris

This is one that I always loved playing when I worked at the oldies station. Image of a Girl was written by Richard Clasky and Marvin Rosenberg. It was a top 10 song, reaching #6 for the Safaris.

As I lie awake resting from the day
I can hear the clock passing time away
Oh, I couldn’t sleep for on my mind
Was the image of the girl I hope to find
Whoa

I look straight up at the ceiling above
Thinking of the girl whom I will love
Oh, would it be soon when she exists?
The image of the girl I’ve always wished
Whoa

I twisted and I turned, ooh, trying to sleep
But all I could do was only to weep
For I haven’t found that image yet
Of all the girls that I have met

And now the clock is still passing time
And I know someday that she will be mine
And I know she’ll always bring me love
For she’s the image of the girl I love
Whoa (image of a girl)

Whoa, ohh (image of a girl)
Whoa, ohh (image of a girl)
