Gene, Gene, the Genome Machine

Human genome infographic with DNA, chromosomes, gene maps, and sequencing data

You may recall that a few weeks ago I was talking about my medications. Back when we did that meeting, they decided to do some genetics to see what my body absorbs, breaks down, etc. The results are in, and they are indeed fascinating.

They went over all my meds and sure enough, some of the meds I was on were ones my body had issues with. But even more fascinating than that, I found out that I have a genetic disorder.

My doc (and almost every other doc) is always telling me I need folic acid. Well, I have an issue with the MTHFR genotype. I guess my body cannot break own folic acid. Well, surprise surprise, folic acid helps with dopamine, serotonin and other hormones that “make you happy.”

So for the rest of my life, I will have to take a supplement that is folic acid in it’s broken down form. This should really help with mood, depression, anxiety and more. I really hope it does.

Science is cool!
