Remember that Simpson’s episode where Homer becomes a Stonecutter? At the beginning of their meeting, they sing a song about all the things they are responsible for. One line in the song asks, “Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?” and immediately they answer, “We do!” He was reportedly flattered by the reference.
Steve was no stranger to Hollywood prior to Police Academy. He starred in Miracle on Ice (1981), Diner (1982), the TV series No Soap Radio (1982) , and The Man Who Wasn’t There (1983). It was the role of Carey Mahoney in Police Academy that really put him on the map.

He would appear in three Police Academy sequels before leaving the Mahoney role behind. He would go on to star in Cocoon, Short Circuit, Surrender, High Spirits, and a cameo in Amazon Women on the Moon. He had a recurring role on TV’s Veronica Mars and also appeared on Dancing With the Stars.
He is very active on social media and often posts uplifting messages to those who follow him. He is involved with many charities whose goal is to improve opportunities for the homeless and for young people.
He published his autobiography in 2012. The Guttenberg Bible was published in May 2012 by Thomas Dunne Books. He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011.
In honor of Steve’s birthday, here is something I got to play along the homecoming parade route one year. This is the Police Academy March.
never saw the movie but you made me want to go back and watch a season or two of early Simpson’s!
