Friday Photo Flashback

I am almost positive that I have posted this picture before. I can across the magazine while looking for something else this week and I thought I’d share it again.

Mobile Beat Magazine was around when I was DJing weddings and parties. At some point it went away, only to be relaunched in 2024. It had great ideas regarding set ups, equipment, contracts, etc… It also put out a top 200 list every year of the most requested songs from that past year. It was a fantastic help when I was out doing gigs.

In one particular issue they did a feature story about mobile DJ’s who were also radio DJ’s. I was interviewed and I was one of those featured in the article. My ugly mug even made it in the magazine!

This photo was taken in the on air studio of B-95. I’m wearing glasses in this photo, but would get Lasik done later that year. Now, almost 30 years later, I’m back to wearing them. I’m also about 100 lighter in this photo. The station itself changed from B-95 to Nash-FM and the recently back to B-95. It no longer is in the building in the picture, and it is a shell of its former self.

The shirt I am wearing was given to me by my buddy Tim, who is now working in major market radio on a morning show. Long before he made it into radio, he and some buddies (Doug and Phil) used to have this set up in their basement where they “played radio.” In all honesty, the stuff they did was better than the stuff you hear on many radio stations today. They would make tapes and I loved them. They called it “Fake Radio” and had me voice some liners for it. Making those up were a blast. I loved that shirt and was sad when it finally was so tattered that I couldn’t wear it anymore!

I haven’t DJ’d since my Goddaughter’s wedding and I haven’t been on the radio since 2020. Do I miss it? Well, if I didn’t have to set up and tear down all the equipment and I could just go in and play music, I might like to do that. That never happens, though. As for radio, yes, I miss it. However, it isn’t the same and I feel like if I did get back into it, I’d just be unhappy at the way things are now. Besides, I’d probably take a $40,000 a year pay cut if I went back, so … I’m good.
