Song Lyric Sunday

For Song Lyric Sunday, Jim Adams has asked us to pick a song written or performed by someone who was born in the month of June. It is probably a coincidence that today would have been Dean Martin’s 109th birthday, but it worked out nicely for this feature.

Dean is my all time favorite singer, so for Song Lyric Sunday, I wanted to share one of my favorite Dino songs.

If someone asked me to pick my favorite Dean Martin album, I would probably pick “Dino – Italian Love Songs.”  I have this on vinyl and I have listened to it more than once on the record player my wife bought me for my birthday.

One of my favorite cuts on the album is a song written by Johnny Cola called Vieni Su. It is a special song to me. I had always wanted a daughter, but instead got two amazing sons from my first marriage. Years later, when my current (and last) wife were married, we discovered that she was pregnant – with a girl. The words of the song really hit home for me. The lyric “Can’t you see how I adore you, And how long I waited for you” took on a whole new meaning. That’s probably why it was the one song that I always sang to her at bed time.

As far as the lyrics to this song, there aren’t many.  As a matter of fact, it’s one verse and a chorus.  Perhaps that’s what makes it all the more powerful to me.  In Italian, Vieni means “come” and Su means “on”.  The song is about a man who has waited for his special woman.  He adores her and loves her.  Now, he wants her to come with him through the years ahead and spend the time ahead together.  A simple love story.

The song was recorded while Dean was still with Capitol Records.  The melody of this song is just beautiful.  I love the entire arrangement of this song.  Dean’s vocal is simple, and spot on.  It is such a perfect love song.  It is one that I can listen to over and over again.

Vieni Su

Vieni su, vieni su, vieni
Come along through the years with me
Can’t you see how I adore you
And how long I waited for you

Vieni su, vieni su
Won’t you say you love me too

Can’t you see how much I adore you
And how long I waited for you
Vieni su, vieni su
Won’t you say you love me too

  1. I grew up listening to Dean and all his contemporaries; my dad loved him best along with Jimmy Roselli and Louis LaRosa. Dean’s big hit song “That’s Amore” was the mother/son dance at my son’s wedding. Great choice this week, Keith.

  2. Keith, good to see you at SLS. My mom had at least one Dean Martin album. It had “You’re nobody til somebody loves you” on it. I remember seeing Dean singing quite a bit on TV. Such a handsome guy with such a smooth singing voice. Great choice for the prompt!

    1. Thanks, Lisa. I’m going to try to take part every week.

Dean will always be my favorite singer. I used to sing You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You” when we’d go out to karaoke. lol!

Years ago, Bear Family Records had 4 Box CD box sets that included every song he ever released. They were expensive, but over a year or so, I got them all. There are so many great songs that never got airplay.

I wish someone would take all of his TV performances and put all of those songs on an album.

      1. You’re welcome. So neat on karaoke night :) Sounds like you have most of the bases covered with Dean’s music. Yes on compiling the TV performances. Do you think they would all fit on one album?
