I have had the book All The Light We Cannot See on my “To Read” list for way too long. I suppose this is cheating, but I stumbled on a Netflix Miniseries based on the book. I decided I had to watch it. I was not disappointed.
The Goodreads synopsis of the book:
Marie-Laure lives in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where her father works. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.
In a mining town in Germany, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another.
From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the stunningly beautiful instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.
I do plan on reading the book to see just how much it lines up with the miniseries. I really enjoyed watching it.
Aria Mia Loberti plays Marie and is wonderful. This is the first I have ever seen her and I liked her immediately.

Louis Hofmann plays Werner. He’s a German actor, who I also had never seen before. He was also very good.

Hugh Laurie and Mark Ruffalo are also featured in the cast.

Lars Eidinger plays Reinhold von Rumple, a Nazi officer who you cannot help but despise! He plays this character so well. I hated him – the character. He was so evil in the series. I was surprised to learn that he is also a rapper! Who knew?

Each of the four episodes is about an hour long and I highly recommend watching it. I cannot wait to read the book!
I haven’t started it yet, but I am anxious to watch the series for the same reason you want to read the book – to see how much is the same and what has been changed. If you listen to it on audio – the narrator is fantastic.
