Song Lyric Sunday

For Song Lyric Sunday this week, Jim Adams has asked us to focus on artists born in November. There were too many for me this month, but I narrowed it down to a half dozen. Many songs I chose don’t have much written about them, but what follows are some of my favorites!

Clyde McPhatter – November 15, 1932

Writer: Billy Swan

Lover please, please come back
Don’t take a train comin’ down the track
Don’t, please don’t, don’t leave me
Don’t leave me in misery

You would never hold me so near
You would never call me “Dear”
Dontcha know I’d die for you?
Now you’re gone, that’s what I’ll do

Lover please, please come back
Don’t take a train comin’ down the track
Don’t, please don’t, don’t leave me
Don’t leave me in misery

All those stories, not too long
About a love that went all wrong
The girl left the boy, just as bad
Now she’s gone, she’s so sad

Lover please, please come back
Don’t take a train comin’ down the track
Don’t, please don’t, don’t leave me
Don’t leave me in misery

You would never hold me so near
You would never have called me “Dear”
Dontcha know I’d die for you?
Now you’re gone, that’s what I’ll do

Lover please, please come back
Don’t take a train comin’ down the track
Don’t, please don’t, don’t leave me
Don’t leave me in misery

Diana Krall – November 16, 1964

Songwriters: Bert Kaempfert (music) and Milt Gabler (lyrics)

L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore can

Love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it, take my heart and please don’t break it
Love was made for me and you

L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore can

Love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it, take my heart and please don’t break it
Love was made for me and you

Hank Ballard – November 18, 1927

There’s a thrill up on the hill
Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go
There’s a thrill up on the hill
Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go

There’s a house party way across town
People comin’ from miles around
Put on your pretty red dress
Let’s go see about this mess
That’s it, baby, let’s git
And go where it is, up on the hill

Gonna have a whole lotta fun
We gonna greet the risin’ sun
All night long, we gonna ball
Until we hear your mama call
That’s it, baby, let’s git
And go where it is, up on the hill

There’s a thrill up on the hill
Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go
There’s a thrill up on the hill
Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go
Let’s go

Everybody’s gonna be there
My friends and yours from everywhere
Oh, what a time it’s gonna be
Come on, baby, let’s go see
That’s it, baby, let’s git
And go where it is, up on the hill

There’s a thrill up on the hill
Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go
There’s a thrill up on the hill
Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go

Glenn Frey – November 6, 1948

True Love was released as a single from his third studio solo album Soul Searchin’, in 1988. In the liner notes to the original album Glenn Frey wrote of the song “For those of you who have my previous albums, I apologize. I just can’t shake my obsession with this Al Green-Memphis thing. Like Wilson Pickett says, ‘Don’t fight it’.”

The song was one of Frey’s biggest hit singles in his solo career, peaking at No. 13 on the Hot 100 and No. 2 on both the U.S. AC chart and Canadian singles chart.

Songwriter: Glenn Frey

Oooooh oooh oooh ohh, yeah

Well, well, yeah

Out of the blue, out of the night
You came along and you changed my life
I’m feeling things, I swear I never felt before
It’s happening, baby

You looked at me, that’s all it took
You read my heart like an open book
Well, it was true love right from the start
It was true love, straight from my heart
It was true love, ain’t no doubt about it, baby
True love, I can’t live without it

Before I met you, baby, I was alone
Thought I was happy livin’ on my own
But now I realize this world was made for two
Like me and you

With you by my side, everything’s fine
There ain’t no mountain, sugar, we can’t climb
We got a true love, that’s all we need
Is a true love, it’s got a lifetime guarantee
It’s a true love, so hard to find, baby
True love, put your heart on the line now

(True love) Makes every day a little brighter
(True love) Makes every burden just a little lighter
(True love) It’ll make you be a better man
If you had true love, you’d understand

Out of the blue, out of the night
You came along and you changed my life
You got me feelin’ things, I swear I never felt before
Shit!

You lift me up, you make me strong
You give me lovin’ lastin’ all night long
When it’s a true love, right from the start
It’s a true love, coming straight from my heart
(True love) Need you here beside me baby
(True love) Need your love to guide me
(True love) I can’t deny this feelin’ no no matter how hard I try
I just know what I feel
And it’s a true love

Woo!

Yeah!

She’s my baby (True love, ooooh) She’s my girl
She changed my life (True love, ooooh) Oh, she changed my world
She’s my buttercup (True love, ooooh) Oh, fill me up
(True love, ooooh)

Talkin’ about love, talkin’ about love, it’s gotta be a true love
(True love, ooooh)
(True love, ooooh)
(True love, ooooh)
(True love, ooooh)

Little Willie John – November 15, 1937

“Talk to Me”, or “Talk to Me, Talk to Me”, is a song written by Joe Seneca. It was originally recorded in 1958 by Little Willie John, whose version reached No. 5 on the R&B chart and No. 20 on the Hot 100.

Talk to me (ooh-ooh), talk to me (ooh-ooh)
Mm, I love the things you say (ooh-ooh)
Talk to me, talk to me (oh-oh-oh)
In your own sweet gentle way

Let me hear (ooh-ooh), tell me, dear (ooh-ooh)
Tell me, ooh-you-ooh, love me so (ooh-ooh)
Talk to me, talk to me (oh-oh-oh)
Tell me what I want to know (I want to know)

The many ways you speak of love, I’ve heard before
But it sounds so good every time
Please say the part I love just once more
Darling, I’m so glad you’re mine

Talk to me (ooh-ooh), talk to me (ooh-ooh)
Hold me close (ooh-ooh), whisper low (ooh-ooh)
Talk to me, baby, can’t you see? (Oh-oh-oh)
Darling, I, I love you so (I love you so)

Oh, the many ways you speak of love, I’ve heard before
But it sounds so good every time
Please say the part I love, just once more
Darling, I’m so glad you’re mine, whoa-oh

Talk to me (ooh-ooh), talk to me (ooh-ooh)
Hold me close (ooh-ooh), whisper low (ooh-ooh)
Talk to me, baby, can’t you see? (Oh-oh-oh)
Darling, I, I love you so

Delbert McClinton – November 4, 1940

The most popular recording of Pledging My Love was done by Johnny Ace. It was released by Duke Records catalog number 136 in December 1954, soon after Ace’s death by an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. Ace’s version peaked on the chart at number 17 and spent 10 weeks at number 1 on the R&B chart.

Other covers: Roy Hamilton, Percy Sledge, Tom Jones, Bobby Vee, Roy Orbison, Elvis and Aaron Neville (among others). Elvis and Delbert’s version are very similar, but I love this one!

Forever my darling our love will be true
Always and forever I’ll love only you

Just promise me darling
Your love in return
May this fire in my soul dear
Forever burn

My heart’s at your command dear
To keep, love and to hold
Making you happy’s my desire
Keeping you is my goal

I’ll forever love you
For the rest of my days
I’ll never part from you
Or your loving ways

Just promise me darling
Your love in return
May this fire in my soul dear
Forever burn

My heart’s at your command dear
To keep, love and to hold
Making you happy’s my desire
Loving you is my goal

I’ll forever love you
For the rest of my days
I’ll never part from you
Or your loving ways

Just promise me darling
Your love in return
May this fire in my soul dear
Forever burn
