The Goonies hit theaters 41 years ago this month on June 7, 1985. That, however, is not the tie in for Movie Music Monday –

The Goonies is one of those 80’s films that is quoted and loved by those of us who grew up watching it. It also had a great soundtrack that featured songs from Luther Vandross, REO Speedwagon, Teena Marie, The Bangles, and Cyndi Lauper. Cyndi is the tie in today, as she is celebrating birthday number 73!
In 1985, Lauper had released just one solo album, but it was one that shot her into stardom. 1983′ She’s So Unusual, included four Top 5 US singles. By 1985, people wanted more music from Cyndi and they got it with “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough.”
Songfacts.com says:
This song was recorded for the 1985 film The Goonies, which came from the Steven Spielberg camp and was directed by Richard Donner. Lauper had a quirky sound that fit well with the film, a campy adventure starring teenaged Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, and Corey Feldman. Lauper’s look was also a good fit for the movie, and when this song appears, it’s in the guise of a video the boys are watching on at TV screen, with Lauper in the frame.
When referring to this song, most folks call it “The Goonies Song.” While the word Goonies is in the title, it is never said in the lyrics of the song. Songfacts says, “The song was given the awkward title “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” to get the movie in there as well as the chorus lyric.”
Cyndi was not a huge fan of the song. It never appeared on her hit collections, 1995’s “12 Deadly Cyns…And Then Some” or “The Essential Cyndi Lauper” in 2003. She actually stopped performing the song live in 1987. She didn’t add it back to her set list until 2004, and audiences loved it.
The video is remembered for having some of the great wrestlers of the day in it. They include: Lou Albano, Andre the Giant, The Iron Shiek, Freddie Blassie, Roddy Piper and more.
Happy Birthday, Cyndi!!
