Friday Photo Flashback

For 15 years, Gary Larson could always be counted on for a daily laugh. From January 1, 1980 to January 1, 1995, The Far Side was my go-to comic. Aliens, cows, cavemen and a vast cast of characters were always there to bring a smile. Long after Gary Larson retired the strip, the 365 cartoon-a-day calendar was always on my wall or on my desk. It didn’t matter how many times I’d read a cartoon, it would still make me laugh.

Our band director, Tom Shaner, always had this calendar on his wall in the office. When I was band president, I would always chuckle when he’d toss a particular day’s cartoon in my mailbox. It was one of many things we bonded over.

I cannot imagine the stress of having to create 365 new comics every year. I’m surprised many of the strips continue today. You have to have a very good imagination and endless ideas. I always thought that Gary’s final strip was the perfect send off to the strip:

I truly miss this strip.

  1. oh man, I never saw that one! I agree, I loved the strip for years and had several books of compilations of them. Such an imagination! Wonder how little Billy is doing… still roughhousing under the hornet’s nest?
