Before I start, I wanted to thank you for your comments on a recent post (The Truth Hurts). I was really struggling with a lot of things and I did get to follow up with the doc.
Since my ADHD was diagnosed, they have been treating it with stimulants like Adderall, Vyvance, etc… Well, part of the issue of using stimulants is that my days aren’t always the same. I work midnights and on those days I would change up the time I took the medication. This was probably only part of the issue.
The doc told me that stimulants can cause irritability. Well, that certainly has been the case lately. Sam joined the conversation and made me (and the doc) aware of other things she has noticed since being on the meds. It was eye opening.
So, we took the rest of the appointment to revamp the entire way we attack my ADHD. Stimulants are gone and I am on another medication now. So far, I feel better. I feel a lot more like me. Hopefully, it continues to get better.
I’ve been seeing my therapist for a few years now. I wonder if it is time to find a new one. Maybe I have gone as far as I can go with this one? I don’t know. She’s good, but I think that I might get farther with someone else. I know now it’s “comfortable” if that makes sense. I’m not feeling the “breakthrough” moments I need. I feel like it’s a rehash of things we have talked about already. I’m need to think on this.
So that’s kind of what’s happening. I do appreciate the kind comments and emails asking how things were going.
Thanks for caring!
Best wishes, Keith. Your intuition about finding a new therapist is spot on.

I’m glad your wife went with you – and that her insight was instrumental in getting your meds adjusted. Doctors will often poo-poo individuals but they slow down and listen to a second person who verifies the situation. Good on her (and you for seeing the advantage.) Therapists do have a shelf-life – and you should most definitely have that discussion with them. Either they adjust or they can refer/recommend to another therapist. If they balk at either then most definitely the relationship is over.

Glad there’s light at the end of the tunnel and you’re making progress! We have one relative on Adderall, he takes it when he needs it, which is rather random from what I can tell. He describes it like legal pharmaceutical crystal meth so to me that doesn’t sound like a very good choice, but many doctors disagree

I must have been on a low dose because I never really felt what so many others say they feel when they take it

Appreciate the update Keith. With the support of your wonderful wife , you’ll get through this. Still I know it’s not easy. Keep the needle in the groove or whatever it is you DJ’s used to say ( which is quite a lot).
