Funny Memory

The above photo is exactly how I remember the cafeteria in K-Mart growing up! Somehow some coworkers and I started talking about the days when you could actually get a full meal at K-Mart (Or as my grandma called it, THE K-Mart.).

As time went on, it became more of a counter that sold pizza and subs and even ice cream. My story involves my grandpa. Apologies if I have told this on here before.

(Note to my brother: You know exactly what story this is, don’t you?)

I have no doubt that my grandfather loved us very much. He would often come over during the summer with candy bars and such. Whenever we were out and about, he’d make sure we got a treat.

So we’re standing at the K-Mart counter because he is going to buy us ice cream. I remember we both got a cone and I had mine dipped in chocolate. My brother wanted his dipped in cherry with nuts on it. I’m not sure I remember why he was a tad flustered at us. Maybe we took forever to decide what dip we wanted or something like that. I’m guessing my brother added the peanuts after he had already ordered the dip.

At any rate, we got about one step in front of the exit and my brother went to lick his ice cream and by doing so, the entire top of the cone – ice cream, cherry dip and nuts – fell to the floor. I’m sure my grandpa was embarrassed, as he got down on his knees with a handkerchief and started to clean it up. My brother was crying because his cone was toast.

We were ushered out of the store by my dad, grandma and grandpa. We got to the car and he looked at my brother and said, “You HAD to have nuts!!” I still laugh about that. Like the extra weight of the nuts was the cause of the catastrophe!

I had forgotten all about that silly story, but was glad to have remembered it tonight! I miss K-Mart, but I miss “Pops” more!
