I got the message from WordPress that my “stats are booming” today. So I went and checked out the information.
I’m not sure what I blog about that is so interesting to China. 2200 views yesterday. 1500 the day before. 1200 the day before that. 1000 the day before that. Prior to that my blog had anywhere from 800-1100 visits a day from China.
I wondered if I was the only one. After searching WordPress, I did find a couple bloggers who also saw an increase in Chinese traffic. What is that all about?
I changed my password, just in case.
Let me know if you are experiencing the same thing….
Sadly no surge in numbers : ( I’d take whatever I can get! Funny thing is, when I’ve visited China I’ve needed a VPN to access WordPress as it’s one of their ‘banned’ websites.

My number of views for my blog are way lower than yours, but before this month my views from China averaged around 35 a month YTD through August. But so far, I’ve had almost 1,000 views from China just this month. WTF?

Where are my Chinese fans?

This is not happening to me, whenever I experience a surge of new views/visitors it’s almost always from India.

I am baffled by this

Nope, mine are pretty steady. Something doesn’t smell right about those types of numbers from there…

I agree! Apparently there are others experiencing the same thing

My views are pretty consistent , day in day out… obviously some days more than others but no real huge spikes or valleys. The one or two times there was a huge jump for a day I was highly suspicious. Likewise with new subscribers – they come in slowly but steadily but there were a couple of times I got 10 or 20 in a day (which usually disappeared within days) from odd-sounding sites – or just scrambles of numbers and letters – from Asia , also made me wonder what was up there

Yes Keith, China has creeped up to #2 on my list of Countries lately. Jeff from EclecticMusicLover posted that he has the same thing happening. My research suggests it’s definitely bots, probably AI driven but lots of Reddit stuff going back years. So far nothing malicious but a huge volume could create headaches for WP in general. Certainly messes with our ability to track stats. That said I had an attack the other day on my blog with dozens of garbage responses to random comments from old posts. I had to adjust my settings to get it to stop. At the rate it was moving I am guessing it was not a bot and the anonymous user identifier pegs it as being created several years ago. Odd.

While my top three (US. UK and Canada) have remained fairly stable, the percentage of traffic from China has steadily increased though is still low compared to the top three. Like Randy I suspect it’s at least in part driven by AI.

I just put in two step verification because last month this happened to me from the Netherlands and this week it is China, like you. This week I have had 4,205 from them. When I contacted WordPress about the Netherlands issue they said the bots are being stopped by their security and it shouldn’t cause any issues on my site but they suggested two-step verification and a couple of other things to keep it from getting worse. I haven’t a clue what about my site would be attracting them. Perhaps Nancy Drew? :)

To clarify…they said the activity was bots because and I quote from support: “I can see the traffic spike on August 16 and 22 on your Stats. This appears to be automated visits, most likely from bots. The number of referrers doesn’t match the number of visits, which is a strong sign that these weren’t real visitors.”
