Breakfast Fun

For the most part, it was a normal morning. Andrew was up first, followed almost immediately by Ella. As I was getting them out of bed, Sam came home from work.

Sam recapped her night at work with me and the kids were taking turns being in her arms. During this time we asked what they wanted for breakfast. We offer them a few choices each day. Today, it was pancakes, waffles, or French toast.

“Waffles!” Ella said!

“French toast, actually sounded good,” Sam said.

I was thinking the same thing, but I figured waffles would be easy for the kids to eat. They usually just hold them in their hand and walk around eating them. Sam reminded me that we had blueberries in the fridge and I would add those to the batter.

I reached up in the cupboard and grabbed the Bisquick. I could tell by the weight of the box in my hand that there probably wasn’t enough for waffles – or pancakes for that matter. So, French toast it was!

Ella always wants to help, so I cracked the eggs into a bowl and had her shake some cinnamon in. She helped me mix it up as the griddle warmed up.

“Do you want smiley face French toast or bear French toast?” Sam asked.

I looked at her puzzled and asked what she meant. She told me that you cut up bananas and can use them for eyes, ears, and a mouth. The kids were excited to help with this step, too.

Ella has a step stool, which Andrew has been using to get to things on counters and why have you. He was standing on it, so Ella needed something to stand in. Sam brought in an laundry basket and turned it upside down. So the two of them were standing on their “stools” and helping mom cut bananas

Once the French toast was done, she dished it out and made bears or smiley faces. Then she cut it up in small pieces for Ella to dip in her syrup, and in slices so Andrew could hold it in his hands.

They both stood on their respective stools and ate as I finished fishing out French toast for Sam and me. After that, we all were just standing in the kitchen, plates on various spots on the counter and each of us eating our breakfast.

As silly as it sounds, this was one of my favorite family breakfasts to date. I shared French toast with Andrew, Sam and Ella were sharing bananas, and we all just enjoyed the moments together as a family.

What a great start to the day!

A Typical Dad Day

(I’ve never read this book, but I may have to …)

Sam worked last night, so it was my day with the kids. What does a typical day with dad look like?

The day starts with Andrew up first. We take the baby monitor out into the living room so we can see when Ella wakes up. I make him a bottle and take care of diaper change number one. Within 5 minutes of finishing the bottle diaper change number 2 is in order, because he poops like clockwork.

We usually go to get Ella together when she wakes up. He thinks its funny to push open her door. I then have to grab whatever Ella wants to bring with her out of the crib. This usually consists of a nana blanket, maybe a book, maybe a stuffed animal, maybe a pillow, or maybe all of the above.

She gets a diaper change and it is time for breakfast. Somedays we eat eggs, others waffles, another day pancakes, and sometimes a smorgasbord of fruits and other things. Sam usually arrives home around breakfast time. Today she brought donuts for them. Ella loves pink dipped donuts, not that she ever eats the donut. She loves the frosting, though.

Depending on the day, we either read books, turn on the TV or play with her toys. This is when I usually make myself and Sam something to eat. I made us scrambled eggs and had to make extra because the kids were eating all of Sam’s!

Sam almost always brings out an outfit for the kids to wear. We ventured out on our morning walk and looked for our puppy friends. She now knows just about every dog in the neighborhood’s name!

When we returned home, she began to read books. Most of the time they are books off her shelf.

After reading one of her favorites, she told me to sit down so she could read me a book. The book? The Weight Watcher’s Cookbook!

She kept calling the sandwich in the book (shown above) a cheeseburger!

While she is reading to be, my daredevil son continues to find ways to hurt himself. He’s been climbing, so Sam thought it was time to bring the swing/slide thing we got for Ella a few years ago back upstairs. Well he can climb it, he just hasn’t really figured out how to slide down yet. So he gets up there and starts shaking the one wall of it and eventually steps on the slide and falls off.

He truly has no fear. Today alone, he busted open his lip three times. None of those were from falling off the slide! He just tripped over stuff and fell on his face. I swear if we have to go to urgent care again, they will have to put in a window just for him.

Comedy continues to ensue with Ella. Today she grabbed her winter coat and winter hat and asked to wear them. She had me help zip up the coat and said, “I’m already for winter and then asked to watch Frozen.

We watched it like 7 times today. I will be singing “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” and “Let it Go” in my sleep tonight!

Lunchtime this week has brought the same answer to question, “What would you like for lunch today?” “Grilled cheese and crackers!” That answer has also been offered up to “What would you like for dinner?” and “What would you like for breakfast?” I’m glad that Andrew isn’t able to answer that question yet. When they both start asking for different meals, it’s gonna drive me crazy!

After lunch, it is nap time. Today, thanks to the neighborhood dogs and open windows, the nap was cut short. Shortly after wake ups, Sam woke up for work. She said some packages she ordered were on the porch and Ella went with her to get them.

They were the Halloween costumes they are wearing this year. I won’t say what they are here, but hers involves a dress. She wanted to wear it. Sam told her she had to wait until Halloween. This was not what she wanted to hear, so Sam offered up another dress for her. My friend from work gifted us some dresses that her daughter has grown out of. They are going to be perfect for holidays or family photos. Anyway, she spent the rest of the evening wearing one of those dresses.

Earlier I had thrown some chicken in the crock pot for dinner. Sam cooked up some buttered noodles to go with it for the kids. I took the chicken out and started cutting it up. I tried a piece to make sure it had cooled down enough and it tasted funny. I can’t even really descibe what it tasted like – but you know how they always say, “it tastes like chicken?” This didn’t. I wound up throwing it away.

After Sam left for work, Ella said she wanted a snack. So she handed me one of those applesauce pouches. Andrew got one, too. They both had like three of them! Ella kept asking for more and when I got her one, he wanted one, as well.

After playing with toys for awhile, more diaper changes were needed and it was pajama time. I was lucky enough to be able to get pajamas on her tonight. I really thought that she was going to want to wear the dress to bed! I’m sure I would have let her…

She took a book to bed with her, we said prayers and I closed her door. I brought Andrew with me and tried to rock him and sing him to sleep. He had the funniest case of the giggles and it took him forever to fall asleep. Once he was asleep, I put him in his crib and took a shower.

Reflecting back on the day:

7 outfit changes. 5 poop diapers. An unknown amount of pee diapers. 3 times sweeping the floor. 2 times picking up the same toys and putting the in the toybox. 2 times vacuuming. 7 viewings of Frozen. 3 busted lips. 8 bumps on the head. 12 crying fits. 2 bad pieces of chicken. 3 cheese omelets, 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. 3 video chats. 7,953 times I heard, “Daddy!” 2 sleeping kids.

Add it all up and it equals one amazing day for a very blessed Dad!

The Most Important Meal of the Day

cornflakes-exp1119-620x400

Today is National Cereal Day.  To be honest, I didn’t know there was such a thing, but it doesn’t surprise me.  There are all kinds of “National Days” that you can keep track of at:  www.nationaldaycalendar.com .

Now that I am an adult, I tend to eat cereals that are “good for you”.  In other words, the cereals that kids will rarely eat because there isn’t enough sugar.  I guess that isn’t exactly true, because some of the cereals I eat have some sweetness to them – Honey Nut Cheerios, Frosted Mini-Wheats, and Life are good examples.  I always referred to cereals like Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes, Cheerios, Rice Chex, and Raisin Bran as “adult cereals” because if you were going to eat them – you almost always had to add sugar.  Cracklin’ Oat Bran has some sweetness to it, but it is also a “bran” cereal, so that puts it on the “adult cereal” list for me.

Adult Cereal

The worst “adult” cereal I ever tried was recommended by my doctor.  I was doing Weight Watchers and I needed to up my Fiber intake.  He suggested Fiber One.  If there is a cereal that is worse than that, I’d like to know!  This stuff was just awful!  It tasted like pieces of cardboard and you could put the entire bowl of sugar in it and it wouldn’t help!

Hot cereals also need to be placed on the “adult” cereal list for me.  I do love oatmeal – maple and brown sugar is my favorite – but, again it falls in the “healthy” category.  I used to hate when mom made Malt-O-Meal.  I am not sure why, I just didn’t like it.  It fell into the same category as Cream of Wheat.  Oh sure, now you can but flavored Cream of Wheat and Malt-O-Meal, but originally, there was one flavor – yuk.  The only hot cereal that was kind of ok for us was CoCo Wheats.  It sort of tasted like chocolate….and sort of like dirt.

Kids Cereals

Watching Saturday morning cartoons, there was no shortage of cereal commercials.  These ads were designed for kids, despite the disclaimer “a part of this nutritious breakfast.”  As a kid I hated going grocery shopping!  The only part I loved was going down the cereal aisle.  Those Saturday morning ads would replay in your head as you saw each box.  We drove my mom and dad crazy in that aisle!

Back in the day, there used to be cool toys in the cereal boxes.  The toys were also designed to get you to buy the cereal and collect the toys.  Rest assured, if your cereal had a crappy toy (or worse – no toy), it did not have a place in our grocery cart!  I collected many cars, spoons that changed color in milk, tops, tattoos, plastic rocket launchers, joke books, flimsy records, whistles and more from those cereals growing up!

Some of the sugar cereals we used to get were Sugar Corn Pops, Honeycomb, Frosted Flakes, Sugar Smacks and Sugar Crisp (which both eventually had the word “sugar” removed from their name and became Honey Smacks and Goldern Crisp), Cookie Crisp, and Cocoa Puffs.  I remember some of the great mascots for these, too!  There was a cowboy with a big yellow hat for Sugar Corn Pops, Sonny was the bird who was “cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs”, Tony the Tiger for Frosted Flakes, and Dig’em the Frog and Sugar Bear!

My Favorites

There was no shortage of “fruit” flavored cereals.  I loved almost all of them!  Trix and Fruit Loops were basically the same cereal in different shapes.  The Trix rabbit was always being told that “Trix were for kids.”  Fruit Loops had Toucan Sam was the bird who told us to “follow his nose” to find the cereal.

Apple Jacks remain one of my favorite cereals. It was an Apple Cinnamon cereal that was loop-shaped.  Originally, the cereal was all orange, but they have since added green loops to it.  I don’t know that I would call them mascots, but I do remember the Apple Jacks Kids from commercials.  This is one of those cereals I can eat in milk or dry and by the handful!

Staying with the “fruit” theme – I still love a huge bowl of Fruity Pebbles!  Their mascot was Fred Flintstone.  In the commercials, Barney was always trying to trick Fred out of his cereal (“Barney, my Pebbles!”).  Seriously, I could probably eat an entire box in one sitting.  I love it!

I remember Alpha-Bits, too!  They were shaped like all the letters in the alphabet.  You would try to spell words on your spoon as you ate breakfast.  I haven’t had them in years, but I bet they still are delicious!

Lucky Charms was basically Alpha-Bits with marshmallows.  Lucky the Leprechaun was the mascot and the cereal was “Magically delicious!”  Originally, there were only 4 marshmallows – pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, and green clovers. There are like 8 of them now!

Cap’n Crunch was another cereal that was popular.  There was the original (which always chewed up the inside of your mouth), Peanut Butter Crunch, and Crunch Berries.  Crunch Berries were (and still are) my favorite.  The berries were so popular, they even put out a box of “Oops – All Berries” once.

I will always love the “monster” cereals!  It seemed like we always had these.  I was a fan of Count Chocula (made the milk turn chocolate – like Cocoa Puffs and Cocoa Pebbles), my brother was a big fan of Boo Berry (Blueberry goodness), and I loved FrankenBerry (loved the strawberry taste of this one)!  I remember their commercials on Saturday mornings and there was always some cool monster toy in the box.  There were two other monster cereals that came and went – one was Fruit Brute (which was cherry flavored and had a werewolf for the mascot) and Fruity Yummy Mummy (generic fruit flavor and a mummy mascot).

Gone but not forgotten

There were some cereals that I remember from my childhood that are no longer around.  I wish they were!  I can’t remember what these taste like, but I remember them – how about you:

I have always been a big fan of maple syrup.   I love waffles too, so when this came out, I had to try it and I remember loving it!

In Closing

Grab a bowl, your favorite cereal, and some milk and chow down in honor of National Cereal Day!  What cereals did I forget to mention?  What ones do you remember growing up?  What ones do you wish were still being made?
