Kiwi for Kids

I had never heard of the Kiwi Company until my friend Margaret told me about it. She wanted to send the kids a “crate” every month. My kids LOVE them! If you have children (any age), these are perfect for those rainy days when they cannot go outside and play. We had a few of those rainy days recently and the projects kept our kids pretty busy.

I love these because they keep the kids off tablets and away from the TV. Each “crate” has a theme. Some recent themes we got were Caterpillars & Butterflies, Camping, Star Gazing, and Exploring nature. Each crate has a project or two (and sometimes a bonus one) that will keep the kids busy.

There is also a little book that comes with each crate. Ours features a koala, alligator and a parrot who are all friends. The story in the book is often related to the theme of the crate. My kids love those books and puts them up on their bookcase.

Here are a few of the projects we worked on in the past month or two. Our nature kit came with a bag, a magnifying glass and a box to keep things from nature. We went out in the yard looking for rocks, sticks, grass, leaves, clovers and flowers. There were a few different cards that could be used to find other things, too.

The camping box came with a fabric sheet to build a tent. It also came with a camp “fire” that you put together (and the light makes it look like fire), a red and white checkered blanket for a picnic, and of course, ants.

In one of the nature boxes, they had the kids make flowers from felt. At the same time, it encouraged them to find sticks and other things that might fit and look good with the felt items.

In the space crate, there were stars and sticks that you could make constellations with. There was glow in the dark paper that you could punch star “holes” in to show a starry night. Finally, some paint to paint your own galaxy.

From top to bottom: Andrew’s, Ella’s and my paintings.

One of the crates had a “polar” theme to it. The kids fell in love with these penguins. It comes with little wooden fish that you stand up. The penguins have a pull string that makes them vibrate and “walk.” The idea is to get your penguin to knock down the fish. They were happy to just snuggle with them.

My favorite one we did was the Caterpillar/Butterfly crate. This tied right in with what Ella’s Preschool class did at the end of the year. They watched a caterpillar curl up in a chrysalis and waited for a butterfly to emerge.

This crate had a plush caterpillar that comes with a bag (chrysalis). You put the caterpillar in the bag and wait …

That caterpillar turns inside out. When it does, you have a butterfly.

The kids thought this was very cool!! Heck, so did I.

We also got to make a butterfly that flaps its wings.

My wife and the kids took “Ice paint” and made pictures yesterday. The crate comes with food coloring and a little “popsicle” maker. Add the coloring to water, freeze it, and pop them out to color on the paper/postcards provided. Too fun!

We’ve probably been doing these crates for 2-3 years now. They just keep getting better. As I said, they have crates designed for various age groups. We’re getting the 3-6 year old crates now. They even have crates for ages 12-100, in case you want to do one yourself.

Knowing how difficult it can be to have the kids in the house all day, having something like this is an amazing way to teach your kids and spend quality time with them.

I am not being paid to talk about Kiwi Company. I am just a satisfied dad who is sharing a great idea. Learn more at their website HERE.

A Royally Good Time

The kids got to go to a neat outing today. The county hosted a “Royal Ball.” They had a DJ, many games and activities, and many of the staff dressed as the various princesses. I had to work, but Sam and her mom took the kids and they had a blast!

There were plenty of photo opportunities.

Ella as Belle. I love that her face fits that perfectly. All too often those “head holes” are so big that your head looks weird in it.

Sam sent this one to me and it is perfect! I love that he wore his sister’s Elsa shirt!

For Ella, she was ALL about the princesses! When she called me to tell me about the ball, she said, “every one of my favorite princesses was there, Daddy!”

Tiana, Elsa and Sleeping Beauty were happy to see her, too!

I love that our community does things like this for our kids. I hope they will always remember these magical moments.

Another magical moment that Sam observed happened last night. Earlier in the day, the kids got one of those Kiwi Crates. Aunt Margaret got them one every month and it has something to read and projects to make. This month the theme was camping.

They got all the materials to make a Bear backpack and a campfire.

They had worked on the projects during the afternoon. They had turned out the lights when it got dark and were “toasting marshmallows” over the campfire. Sam had taken the dog out to go to the bathroom. As she looked through the big window, she could see them “by the fire.” It was really heartwarming to see them together.

I’m looking forward to spending the weekend with them.

Cartoon Moment and The Life Lesson

One of the first things I do when I get up is look back at Facebook Memories. I didn’t need it to know that today is the birth anniversary of my high school band director, my mentor, and friend Tom Shaner.

He passed away before Christmas in 2020. I wrote an emotional blog about him here:

The memory that came up with a montage of photos read:

Remembering one of the best on his birthday. He was probably one of the most important role models, mentors, and friends I have ever had. What a blessing it was to remain friends long after high school. I miss our telephone chats and email exchanges. Every time I hear a bad pun or long joke with a bad punch line, I always think, “TS would have loved this joke!” Whenever I see an old Far Side cartoon, I wonder if it might have been one that he ripped off his wall calendar and put in my mailbox while at school. There are so many wonderful memories of our friendship. I miss him a lot. Happy heavenly birthday, Tom.

I shared the memory again, along with the picture montage. I used to call him on his birthday every year. I’d always ask how old he was and he would always swap numbers. If he was 75, he’d tell me he was 57. I always enjoyed our chats.

Shortly after I posted the memory, the kids and I were sitting out in the living room and Bluey was on Disney Plus. One of my favorite episodes was on – Camping.

In the episode they are camping and Bluey meets a friend. They play together for a few days and have loads of fun, despite a language barrier (Jean Luc is French). They pretend that Bluey’s dad is a wild pig and they plan to catch it (you’ll see why I mention that shortly). One morning Bluey goes to find Jean Luc to play, but he and his family have gone home. Bluey goes around to all the various places they played at to look for him, but she cannot find him. When her mom (Chilli) tells her she saw them leave, she is sad to hear that they have gone.

She asks her mom why he had to go. The following exchange occurs:

Bluey : Why did Jean-Luc had to go?

Chilli : Their holiday was over, Honey.

Bluey : But I want to keep playing with him! He was my friend!

Chilli : Well look sometimes special people come into our lives, stay for a bit. Then they have to go.

Bluey : But that’s sad!

Chilli : It is! But the bit where they were here was happy, wasn’t it?

Bluey : Yea, we caught a wild pig together!

Chilli : Maybe that makes it all worth it?

Bluey : Will I ever see him again?

Chilli : Well, we’ll never know. The world is magical place!

This above exchange took on a whole new meaning when I thought of my friend.

Chilli : Well look sometimes special people come into our lives, stay for a bit. Then they have to go.

Bluey : But that’s sad!

Chilli : It is! But the bit where they were here was happy, wasn’t it?

I asked myself that question. Yes, the bit when he was here certainly was happy. It was certainly a time of music, laughter, fun, and friendship.

It’s funny how a cartoon exchange can offer a simple life lesson – one very much like the life lessons Tom shared with so many of us.

While we might be sad that some loved ones are no longer with us, may we always remember the happy bit of time we shared with them.

“Hot” Summer Night Perfection

sunset-760x506

Here in Michigan, Summer is never long enough.  This year, I am guessing it will feel even shorter.  I say that because we had a whole lot of rain that lasted well into May and June.  Many friends have said that they were late opening their pools or planting gardens because of the rain.  Finally, though, summer is here and it is time to enjoy!

I have many things that I love about summertime:  beach days, golfing, walks through the neighborhood, swimming in a pool, picnics, mowing the grass, and just generally being outside enjoying nature.  One of my favorite things about summer, is sitting around a bonfire with family and friends.

Usually, by this point in the year, we would have about 10 fires under our belt by now.  However, because of the rain and such, we’ve only had two.  We had our first on the 4th of July when we were all out in the backyard watching the fireworks.  We had our second one last night.  It was Sam and I, my aunt, my sons, and some of the neighborhood kids.  It was the perfect night.

It was cool last night, but not chilly.  It wasn’t so chilly that we needed sweatshirts or anything like that.  We had the tiki torches full of insect repellent fuel and burned some some citronella candles to keep the mosquitoes at bay (the one downside of being outside).  We live in a society where we are always on the go, and relaxing around a bonfire helps us to forget that and actually enjoy life.

Before we were married, when I moved in with Sam, the firepit was the first home project I tackled.  It was actually a very easy and inexpensive.  I think we bought all the supplies (rock, bricks, the ring, etc…) for about $200.  That price will go up depending on what kind of pit you want and how big you want it.  You certainly can spend about $500-$600 on a big one, or one that runs on propane.  No matter what the cost, it is worth every penny!

My first experience with bonfires was back when my parents had a pop up camper and we’d go camping.  They usually got a camp site that had a stainless steel fire pit.  When you are camping, you’re out in the great outdoors!  The stars are a bit brighter, the crickets are a bit louder, and the sounds of the crackling fire cut through the silence of a dark summer night.  My folks would spray my brother and I down with Deep Woods Off or some other brand of insect spray and we’d just sit around the fire telling stories.

Even though our fire pit is smack dab in the middle of our back yard, and the sounds of the city can still be heard, it is just as relaxing as if you were in the woods camping.  There is something “comfortable” about sitting around a campfire. Gazing up at the stars (or moon, which was awesome last night), storytelling, or just simply sitting and enjoying the peace of it all.  Time is no longer a factor – it’s amazing!

The kids love the bonfires because they mean s’mores!  I used to feel the same way as a kid!  I always found it a challenge to get that marshmallow roasted perfectly.  This rarely happened, and I got used to eating burnt ones!  Gooey marshmallows on a graham cracker with chocolate – how can you go wrong!?  Recently, I tried them with Reese’s Peanut Butter cups – that’s a game changer!!  Wow!!  Yum!

Bonfires are special.  I really don’t know how to explain it.  It’s quality time with those you care about.  It’s quality conversation.  It’s actually laughing out loud with friends instead of texting “LOL.” It’s meaningful.  It’s making memories.  It’s a great summer night activity that continues into early fall and gets better with hoodie sweatshirts!

Light the tiki torches … I’m already looking forward to the next bonfire ….
