Appliance Angina

Two Friday nights ago, I came home and went to sleep. In the middle of the night Sam nudges me and says, “Keith! What is that?!” I hear this ungodly growly/grumbling/gurgling sound. I hop out of bed and slowly made my way to the door. Once I opened the door, I could hear other noises accompanying the ones we heard from the bedroom.

It was then that I could tell that our refrigerator was breathing its last breaths. It was making some noises that I had never heard before. Saturday morning, it was running fine, however, we realized that we needed to go get a new one.

I measured the old one. I obtained the cubic feet and had every thing I thought we would need and decided to shop for one over the weekend.

It was then that Sam told me that it was about time to get a new stove/oven. The temperature of the oven, never matched what we set it at. This made baking especially difficult. We decided that we would get one of those too.

Sam also pointed out that it was also time to get a dishwasher and that sometimes, they had deals when you bundled them all together. We added one of those to the list, too.

You got all that so far? Refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher. Go ahead and give yourself a rough estimate of the costs in your head. Cha-CHING! Thank God for the Labor Day sales!

We ran some numbers and shopped around and figured out the best deals. Lowes had a nice deal on a stove and dishwasher, so we ordered them from there. For the fridge, we opted for Menards. All of them were stainless steel and all the same brand, so all was good, right? Hold tight, dear reader, the fiasco is just about to begin!

The dishwasher and stove were to be delivered first. We received the call the day before giving us the window of when they were coming. It was going to be just after I left for work, so Sam was waiting for them. I hadn’t been to work more than 10 minutes when I got her call.

“Where the hell is my stove!?”

I asked her what she was talking about and she said that they had only delivered the dishwasher. I called Lowes and gave them the order number. They told me that the order stated that we “carried the stove out of the store.” I told them that they could check their videos, because the only thing we left with were some Halloween decorations!

I asked them why I would only have one appliance delivered and not both! They made some calls and told me that they would deliver the stove two days later. I told them I appreciated them sorting things out, and hoped that everything was set.

The next day the refrigerator was to be delivered. I was driving to work when they called to tell me that they would be at the house shortly. I explained that the kit for the waterline was in the kitchen for them to hook it up. The guy told me that they didn’t do that. I informed him that the people at Menards said that we needed to have the kit or they wouldn’t hook it up. The guy told me that they were not allowed to hook it up for insurance reasons. I was furious! I told him ok and I called Sam and told her to expect them.

Shortly afterward, Sam called to say that they were taking the fridge back to the store. When I asked why, they told her it wouldn’t fit through the door. They were not allowed to unbox it on the porch. They were not allowed to leave it on the porch. They were also not allowed to take the fridge doors off to get it through the door. You can only imagine how angry I was.

I called Menards and got someone on the phone who told me that “everyone is sue happy” and that was the reason they cannot do those things. I told them to refund the money to my card and I’d be back to find a smaller fridge. It was after that they they told me that since they were technically at the house, the delivery fee was not refundable!

Back to the stove. The day it was supposed to be delivered they called to say that they had to delay it another day. This may or may not have been the day that there was trouble with the delivery truck. Things are all starting to run together. At any rate, they next day, they called to tell us that they had sold the stove and we’d have to wait again.

I went off on the gal at the store. She told me that she would have the manager call us back. He finally did and once again arranged for a delivery. That delivery didn’t happen either. Once again, we called and it was finally supposed to be delivered today. We waited for the pre-delivery call last night. It never came.

Sam called first thing this morning and they told her it was not coming. She asked to speak to a manager and they said one would call us back. I answered the phone and this guy got an earful. How many times are you going to tell me you are coming? How many days did we rearrange our lives, work schedules, babysitters, etc only to have it not show? He assures me that it will be delivered tomorrow and refunded us 15% of the price. In my opinion, it was not enough, but hopefully the stove will be here tomorrow.

Back to the fridge.

We happened to have last night together and we went up to Menards. I had the measurements that we needed to get a fridge that will fit through the door. I felt bad for the gal who was helping us, because I told her how ridiculous it was that they couldn’t unbox it and get it in the house. I explained about the delivery charge and told her that whoever I had talked to said that sometimes a general manager could waive a fee – he didn’t. So now, I had to get a fridge that was not on sale, so it cost us more, and we will have to pay to have this one delivered, too! It is also supposed to be delivered tomorrow.

I truly hope that both of these appliances arrive tomorrow and that there are no issues getting them into my house! I am not sure they are going to want to hear from me if something else goes wrong!!!

I Did It Myself!

If you have followed this blog, you know that the majority of the home projects I do are done with my father-in-law. He is always there to help me with things and I am so grateful for him.

Recently, you may recall, we got a second hand playscape. We knew it would probably need a bit of patch work. The other day, when Ella was climbing the rock wall, one of the rocks just fell off.

Most of the wood on it was starting to dry rot. So I went into my garage and took a look at the wood I had left from the deck/porch project. I had plenty of boards and a couple 2×4’s. That was really all I needed. I knew that Menard’s had the little “rocks” that were mounted to the boards, so I could pick those up after I put the new wall together.

It didn’t take long to measure everything out. The speed square I bought got a lot of use that day. Once the wall was finished, I packed the kids in the car and drove to Menard’s. The problem was, that they were out of the “rocks.”

I began to wonder how I could get around this problem. We looked at some of the other “swing set/playscape” accessories and there it was. It was a big plastic thing with holes in it. Basically, you build a square frame and mount this inside the frame. I, of course, thought “Why can’t I mount this thing right onto the wall I built?”

I ran to the tape measure aisle. Measured the plastic piece and saw that it would fit! So 8-12 screws later – it was mounted and guess what? The kids love it!!

An entire project finished without having to call my father-in-law for help!! Woo hoo!!

It’s Coming Along

My father-in-law and I are a far cry from Al Borland and Tim “the Tool Man” Taylor. As I have stated before, he is brilliant when it comes to home improvement projects. Any time we have run into a snag, he’s always been able to find the right solution.

A few days ago, I posted about the deck project. If you missed it, you can read that post here:

He came over Saturday afternoon and we got the remaining two posts up. Afterward, we had to trek off to Menards to get the rest of the deck boards. They still have our street tore up and Sam wasn’t sure he’d be able to get his trailer down the road, so he didn’t bring it with him. Instead, we took his truck to get our supplies.

He is always thinking ahead. Knowing that the deck boards were 12 feet long, he packed a battery operated circular saw. Once we got all the boards, we found a spot in the back of the parking lot and began cutting them in half so we could put them in the back of the truck.

Once we got back home, we began to lay the deck boards. For some reason, some of the tongues were not fitting into the grooves. They should just fit together like a puzzle piece.

We needed 45 deck boards. We went through and picked the best looking ones out of the ones they had there. Some were a little darker than the others, some seemed a little thinner than the others, but they are all the same part number.

When we start laying them in, some really had to be forced together. We were tapping them in with a 2×4 and a sledge hammer in order to get them to snap together. Some of the boards may have been bowed a bit, too. It was a lot more challenging than we expected. We did make headway, though.

We’re about half way there.

My father-in-law plans to put the remaining ones on and then trim the ends. He says it will be easy, and I trust him. He is having some surgery this week which will slow him down. He was talking about coming over this weekend to finish, but I told him there was no hurry. Sam and I were more worried about getting the support posts up. There are still boards leading to the door, so we can wait a little while.

I may attempt to lay a couple down, but I’m not sure I want to try without him there. I’m so grateful for his help on this!

A Happy Weekend

Tuesdays mean back to work for me. Technically, Mondays are still part of my “weekend.” Yesterday, I wrote about the amazing birthday I had Monday, but wanted to share a few other highlights from the past couple days.

Sunday was Mother’s Day. Sadly, Sam had to work that night. That didn’t stop us from celebrating. The kids made sure to spoil mommy with a card and cake.

We also made sure she had plenty of flowers to brighten her day.

We got her a Grey’s Anatomy sweatshirt that she wanted and of course, she got the porch rocker we built. Before she left for work, I was able to snap one of the best photos of her and the kids!

Today, the weather in Michigan was perfect. I wanted to go to Menard’s to pick up the wood that I need to rebuild part of the playscape in the back. However, because it was so nice, I took the kids up to the park to play first. They had a blast!

For Andrew, there were so many things to play with. Slides, rocks, and even tic tac toe.

Ella just loved running around and playing with the other little girl who was there, too.

Every once in a while, they stop at just the right time for perfect pictures.

After the park, I ran up and got the wood. I also got a couple shepherd’s hooks and two hanging flower baskets for the front of the house. On the way home, I stopped and got the kids lunch and we had a picnic on the porch before naptime.

Along with the fun of my birthday, this weekend was just loaded with wonderful memories! I hope your weekend was just as happy!

No Excuses Now, Mister Fix It

You may recall that last summer, my father-in-law and I tackled a plumbing issue at our house. That incident required us cutting up the drywall to access pipes. The results were not pretty.

The above picture was taken during the project. We were able to get pipes fixed and the hole has remained in the wall ever since. This is partly because there is always someone sleeping in the bedroom where the repair has to be made.

I digress.

Way back in the summer, my wife asked me to apply for a Menard’s card. I kept meaning to do it. I was going to do it the last time I was in there, but I had both kids with me and they were anxious to leave.

After talking about the hole in the wall, and how I need to get an access panel for it, I decided to go on their website to apply for their credit card. I figured if I got approved for a couple hundred bucks, that was all I needed to get the things for the bedroom. Well, I was approved – for a much larger amount!

I have to really take a step back and remember that I don’t need to spend that much money. However, there are things that need to get done (and haven’t) because the budget didn’t allow for it. The access panel – has to be done.

The thing is going to cost like $50 and depending on the hole in the wall, and such, I may need to patch a bit of the drywall. $50! It’s a plastic door for crying out loud, but ok. I need to get it done.

All of the doors in our house have the handles that look like this:

Personally, I like them. However, they are perfect for Andrew to get to – and open. Sam and I discussed switching them all over to the round brass handles.

Some of them will have locks on them. Those will need to have the “easy unlock” from the other side, in case the kids lock themselves in a room. You know, the notch you can put a butter knife in and turn? And the round door knobs will allow us to put those childproof covers on that the kids can’t turn.

So, we have the access panel project and the door knob project. There are still a couple other projects.

Our bedroom had a ceiling fan/light fixture in it. The bulbs are all halogen and extremely hard to find. If you can find them, they are like $30 apiece. The entire fixture has 5 lights in it and currently only has one that works. Thank goodness for the lamp on my bedside table! Sam has been talking about getting rid of the whole thing and just putting in a regular light since we moved in together.

Something as simple as the light above – or something even more simple – would work. So that project is also on the list.

Finally, in our living room, the ceiling fan/light has needed to be replaced for some time. This should be an easy swap since we are just going to get another light/fan fixture.

At some point, we’d love to do something with the lighting in our kitchen, but that’s probably enough projects for now. Unless my father-in-law and I can figure out a way to build a deck in the back of the house really cheap! It couldn’t hurt to just price it all out, right?!
