Friday Photo Flashback

This being the first Friday Photo Flashback of the New Year, I went looking for a New Year’s Picture. It seems like I was always doing something for New Year’s Eve. Usually, we’d hang out at the VFW hall with my folks. There was always cheap drinks, good music and good people.

When I got married to my ex, I recall spending one NYE at a Mason Lodge. It was right downtown and they did fireworks at night. There were a few years where we’d get a block of 3-4 hotel rooms. My ex’s sisters would each get a room for their family. We’d all bring a dish to pass and play board games. When the hotel thing became too expensive, one of the sisters hosted. There were plenty of game nights as I recall.

One year, my best friend Jeff was dating a mutual friend of my sister-in-law. So he came over that NYE. Everyone was to wear one piece pajamas that night. It was ridiculous, but fun. They had this Can-Jam game that we played in their basement.

I had quite a few photos from those various events to choose from. However, I found one that I treasure, despite the way I look. The photo was probably taken NYE 1996 or 1997.

This photo of my mom and I was taken at the VFW Hall. I am sure that my dad was DJing the party. If I had to guess, my Uncle Tom was probably there, as well as many of the other veterans. These parties were so much fun.

I love this picture because we both look happy as ever! I see that my mom is wearing what we called a “Brooks and Dunn” shirt. My dad was probably wearing one, too. They were big into line dancing at the time. I’m sure there were plenty of those played that night. I have “gone country” in the picture, too. You can see that by the silly “tie” I am wearing.

The simple joy of being together is on both of our faces. This is how I always remember my mom. Healthy, laughing and smiling. It is a perfect capture!

Happy New Year – Welcome 2024

“Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” – Carl Bard

2024 rang in quietly at my place. Sam worked New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. I was in bed and asleep by 11:45pm on NYE. I didn’t even hear the fireworks and gunshots. At 5:45am, Daisy was barking to go outside. I got up, got dressed, and took her outside. The sad thing about this who scenario is that the first kiss of 2024 for me … was from the dog!

Sam came home and went to sleep and the kids and I prepared for my dad’s visit. Each of us had things going on over the holiday, so he said he’d drive up on New Year’s Day. He brought the kids their Christmas presents. Ella got a Barbie Camper and Andrew got a Little People car wash. Naturally they fought over the toys while my dad and Rose were there. During one loud batch of screaming, I looked at my dad and said, “By the way, I was hoping you could babysit the kids for a few days.” LOL

Rose doesn’t like her picture on the net, so I cropped her out of the picture. It is always nice when the kids get to see them.

I’m glad I got to see my dad. I feel like I see him less now with my new schedule, but we still talk all the time. There’s nothing better than seeing each other in person, though.

My yearly recap is coming and a pretty big thing happened today that brought me to tears. More on that next blog.

Quick Post Before 2024

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is an odd one. I never seem to know what day it is.

I plan on looking back at 2023 blog in the coming days, but wanted to take a quick moment to thank you. I never imagined that anyone would find the things I write about interesting.

Thank you for reading. Thank you for your likes and comments. Thanks for your friendship and your encouragement throughout the year (s). It truly means a lot to me and my family.

To those who have asked me to write pieces for your blog – thank you. I really enjoy the opportunity to write for you. Perhaps there is something you might want to write that would be something I can feature here? Let me know. We’ll discuss.

With just about an hour before 2024 makes an appearance, I already know that I will be sleeping. So as 2023 wraps up, I want to wish you and yours a very happy and blessed New Year. May it be memorable and full of happiness.

Less Than 24 Hours Away …

As 2022 fades into a memory, I’d like to thank you for following my blog and reading my ramblings. At some point, I’d like to look back at the year and reflect, but for now I thought I would look ahead. Here are some great quotes (some of which I may have posted in the past) to kick start the new year.

May the new year present us with wonderful memories, blessings, and lots to explore. May our days be filled with happiness and love.

Friday Photo Flashback

I’m just under the wire for another Friday Photo Flashback. For this edition, we go back to Y2K!

The above photo was taken outside the Country Music Hall of Fame on either December 31, 1999 OR January 1, 2000. I was working at B95 in Flint, MI at the time. We had a huge promotion where we took a couple buses of listeners to Nashville to ring in the year 2000 with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. I believe Kenny Chesney and some other singer all were with them that night.

Kristine Turner, our morning show co-host, and I were the station chaperones. I don’t recall if the listeners bought tickets to go or if they won them, but the trip was quite a whirlwind and awesome time. I remember we left Flint at the crack of dawn and drove all the way to Nashville nonstop. I believe when we arrived at the hotel, we had time to check in, change and we left for the show.

The atmosphere in the arena was electric! For weeks, all the news could talk about was Y2K and all the potential issues and uncertainty that may or may not happen at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Y2K was the furthest thing from everyone’s mind at the show! It was a big party.

The year 2000 rang in to loud cheers, Auld Lang Syne, and couples kissing. Afterwards, the concert continued. We knew the buses were heading back to the hotel until much later, so we ventured out into downtown Nashville. All along Broadway, EVERY bar was hopping with activity. We stopped at almost all of them. Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, where singers like Terri Clark were discovered, was packed and we enjoyed some great music.

As we walked the streets of Nashville, people were coming up to us. I had worn my Detroit Tigers jersey to the show and people from Michigan kept stopping us asking us where we were from and then telling us what Michigan town they were from. There were many hugs and handshakes throughout that walk. I don’t think things closed down until like 4am that night. It was unreal how busy the town was that night.

The following morning, New Year’s Day, we had a few hours to walk around and take in some sights before the buses left to go home. We opted to go to the Opryland Hotel and walk through there. I won’t lie, I had no idea how big it was and just how much was in there. I remember thinking, “Wait. You are leaving our hotel … to go see another one?”

I was floored when I walked in. I remember seeing the boat that floated through the hotel. I couldn’t believe it. The hotel was obviously more than a hotel. I enjoyed walking through it and checking out the attractions. I may have gotten a caricature done while I was there. Years later, after we were married, Sam and I took a trip down to see her aunt in Kentucky. On the way home, we made a stop in Nashville and took that boat ride together.

On that trip, time was very limited, but it still was a lot of fun. We did have one “incident” on that trip. We stopped at one point, I can’t remember if it was to eat or maybe at a rest stop to just get out and walk for five minutes. One of the bus drivers actually locked the keys in the bus! This is the same bus driver who had taken us on a “tour” of Nashville at some point during the trip and got lost! I had to laugh, because I could see us stuck there for a while. Luckily, someone was able to reach in and get ahold of the arm that opened the door. It was no easy task, but we finally were able to get back on the bus and head home. That was a story I enjoyed telling on the air!!!

I have yet to actually walk through the Country Music Hall of Fame, so I think another trip to Nashville is in order.
