Every now and then I read something that hits the nail on the head. That is the case with this blog from Earthly Comforts.
It seems to me that the industry forgot that a sitcom is a “situation comedy.” Do yourself a favor and watch an old episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Honeymooners, The Jack Benny Show, I Love Lucy and countless other classic shows. As you watch you will see characters in hilarious situations, caught up in funny misunderstandings, and ridiculous extremes. Oh, and you WILL laugh.
What follows in a blog from Earthly Comforts to brings out the sad truth of “sitcoms” today.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please comment below and tell me what you think.
A reflective look at why genuinely funny televised sitcoms feel increasingly rare, exploring humour, ageing, creative fear, and what comedy seems to have lost along the way.
I'm just a guy who likes the classics. I love Old Time Radio Shows. I love Classic TV. I love Classic Movies. I love songs from the "Great American Songbook". I dig songs from the first decade of Rock and Roll. Don't get me wrong, I am not opposed to newer things. My musical taste ranges from Classical to Classic Rock and Country to Rap. I love a good book and am always looking for something to read. I tend to lean toward historical fiction, biographies, mysteries, and more.
I have always believed that our past (and the things we've experienced in it) make us who we are today. That being said, after reading through some old My Space blogs (yeah, that's about how long it's been since I blogged regularly), I decided that I should once again write. Welcome to my blog. I hope you find it interesting, thought provoking, and entertaining in some way.

yes, so much has been lost over time, not really the same things at all anymore
A lot to take in there and I rarely watch current network sitcoms so it’s difficult to evaluate fully but my impression is in line with their idea that writers have to pre-think every reaction because they want to avoid anything that might offend anyone at all, so many ‘risky’ jokes or characters get axed. Also I think there’s a shortage of ideas for novel shows… dysfunctional but loving families, badly- run workplaces, young friends who are surrogate families to each other…it’s all been done. Many times and likely better.
