It’s the Simple Things

Our lives are constantly busy. So often, we forget to enjoy the little things. That’s exactly what I did this week. For example, I noticed the birds singing away as I stood outside with the dog at 6am. I made it a point to really enjoy the first cup of coffee in the morning. No phone, just me and my coffee. Those kind of things.

When we slow down and take it all in, it is amazing what we see and hear. Then there are other things that just make life a bit happier.

One of those things for me is always the first mow of the season. Maybe it is a guy thing, because I know three Facebook friends who also posted a picture of their first cut on their page.

There is something so satisfying about looking at a freshly mowed lawn.

Spending one on one time with the kids is another one of those wonderful things. This week, I once again went to my daughter’s school for Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students). I always love being able to be in her classroom. At circle time, the teacher asked them to each talk about something they ate over the weekend. Ella said spaghetti and garlic bread. Then she went on to say, “My mom burned the bread the last time she made it. My dad made it this time and it was perfect.” Nothing like calling mom out …

We both got to eat lunch together. Ella thought it was cool that we both had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Then she noticed we both had yogurts and Cheez Its. “We both had the same lunch!!”

After I dropped Ella off at school Tuesday, Andrew wanted to go to a “coffee place.” His mom will occasionally have a drink of her iced coffee, and he will sneak sips of my coffee when he thinks I am not looking. So we stopped at Tim Horton’s before school and he enjoyed a decaf coffee with cream and sugar. He was talking about everything. His friends at school, his teachers, what the dog did, etc… It was time well spent.

The older I get, the more I realize the importance of those special moments and the things that too often go unnoticed.

  1. Yay Tim Hortons! Good philosophy in there Keith, little things add up and matter. I’ve come to semi-like mowing the lawn, it gives me time to both notice little things like birds flying over and to let my mind wander for ideas for writing quite often
